Slate is so durable that often the nails holding the slate in position rot away before the slate reaches the end of it life expectancy, known I the trade as “Nail sickness”. This can often be fixed by removing one slate and then using copper or zinc strapping to hold the slate in position. Sometimes the nails are in a state of disrepair and the only option is to remove all the slate, replace sarking and battens and re-lay the old slate on top. In most cases the slate will still outlast the homeowner due to its superior qualities as a roofing product.
At Heritage Slate roofing we stock and supply reclaimed slate for the Sydney Market.
