Welsh Slate, The best and most popular in the world.

Comes with a 100 year warranty direct from the quarry and with a 20 year workmanship guarantee from Heritage Slate Roofing. Heather Blue in colour makes this one of the most desirable slates on the market.

Operating from its quarries in North Wales, Welsh Slate has been supplying the world with high-quality slate for hundreds of years. Penrhyn Quarry has been producing roofing slate since the thirteenth-century.

Penrhyn Welsh slate has been exported to Australia since the very early days of Australia’s settlement. In the early days of the colony, roofs were generally made of bark and sometimes timber shingles.

The first records of Welsh Penrhyn slate being used was in the Rocks, Sydney in 1820.

Due to it’s popularity and limited supply there are times when this material may be found scarce or low on supply. At this current point in time we are seeing supply of Welsh Slate becoming harder to get due to Covid import factors that we are working through with the supplier.

But of course it’s not the end of the day if Welsh Slate supply is scarce, there are some great alternatives that we also love to install and inform customers about.

Spanish (Del Carmen) Slate

Spanish slate comes in a blue/black colour and is at the lower end of the scale in terms of cost, but does not compromise on quality. Come with a 100 year warranty direct from the quarry and a 20 workmanship warranty from Heritage Slate Roofing.

Imbued with natural colour and character as well as strength, Spanish slate is the roofing material of choice. It adds warmth, elegance and beauty to any architectural style – domestic or commercial, traditional finish or modern twist.

Newcastle East Public School is the oldest school in continuous operation in Australia.

Newcastle East Public School is a public school located in the New South Wales town of Newcastle, Australia. It is the oldest continuously running school in Australia, established in 1816 by a convict on conditional pardon, Henry Wrensford.

The Tyrrell Street school is now a site of historical significance in Australian education. It is of itself a building of heritage value that has been restored to its former glory, having housed education in many different guises.

The Tyrrell Street school embodies a synthesis of the history of three of the most historically important schools in Newcastle; Newcastle East Public School, Newcastle Public School, Newcastle High School and their offshoots.

Henry Wrensford was a twenty-six-year-old convict when he was convicted of fraud and sentenced to seven years’ transportation.

It was only two years later in 1814 that he was granted a conditional pardon by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, with his occupation recorded as “schoolmaster”.

Wrensford started the school in May 1816 with eight girls and nine boys attending, aged from three to thirteen.

In 1878 the school moved to the current site in Tyrrell Street. The success of this new public school led the state government to take control of the church school in 1883 and name it Newcastle East Public School.

HERITAGE SLATE ROOFINGS ROLE

We have the honour to help aid the restoration of this heritage listed school in NSW by offering our slate roofing expertise. The school will undergo a complete re-roof using none other than Welsh Slate. Below is the current old roof that will be stripped, re-battened & complimented with brand new Slate!

A lot has changed since the emergence of new mining technology, transportation services & excavation techniques that has revolutionised the process from start to finish. These new processes have created a significant array of benefits in comparison to the life of the hardcore, tough as nails quarry worker that pioneered the first set of processes & techniques on various ways to mine this beautiful inherent resource. This in short is a story board of the life of a quarry worker in North Wales back in the early-mid 19th Century.

Men worked six days a week for very poor wages and in sometimes desperate conditions. It took five years of apprenticeship to become a full miner, and even then the skilled labour was not reflected in pay. The men were employed on monthly contracts, with the first three weeks of each month being paid in ‘sub’ wages: a nominal subsistence amount.

The fourth week was paid with profits and bonuses added, less cost of… everything essentially. Miners had to pay for explosives, tools, sharpening and even air for the pneumatic drills. This didn’t add much to the hard earned pay packet at the end of a long week of labour.

Physical conditions, too, were harsh, cold, & often involved a very high degree of danger. Skilfully wielding the hammers and chisels that were the tools of their trade, they would dangle on ropes round their body and legs from pins at the top of the gallery in which they were working. The slate was nearly always damp and slippery, there could be rock falls and the ropes often broke. Below is a great look in to what the conditions were like back in the early 1960’s:

If an accident happened, the on-site medical facility was a St John’s Ambulance station run by miners themselves as volunteers. For men working away from the seam, slate dust was the major cause of medical complaint. This could – like coal dust for miners in South Wales – cause silicosis and other respiratory illnesses.

Miners dangers were many. He may be crushed to death at any time by the falling roof, burned to death by the exploding of gas, or blown to pieces by a premature blast. So dangerous is his work that he is excluded from all ordinary life insurance. During the last thirty years over 10,000 men and boys have been killed and 25,000 have been injured in this industry. Not many old men are found in the mines. The average age of those killed were around 32.13.

The pace with which the slate mining industry expanded during the 19th century was such that although the men worked extremely hard, demand outstripped production and the UK market turned to Spanish imports to take up the slack.

Looking at where we are today compared to the olden days, you could say a lot has changed over the past few decades. Here’s a video from Lagan Building Solutions narrated by former Director Peter Lagan on his perspective with where the industry is at, his product & his vision for the future.

Welsh Slate & slate from around the world has come along way as you could read / watch from the above reading. From harsh, dangerous manual labour to sustainable, automated, efficient work systems can only be dedicated to the hard working forefathers that pioneered the craft of Slate Mining.

The other day we were sent this by a neighbour who was a big fan of one of our Slate roof jobs in Hunters Hill. A very interesting perspective along with some funny details along the way of his Slate Roof Journey. An obvious stickler for construction in specific roofs.

Anonymous Neighbour;

“The pure elegance & sophistication of a slate roof is undeniably something to gawk & gaze at when going for a walk or tuning out to some smooth fm in the car whilst waiting at a red light. It really is something that catches the eye & curiosity of the casual by-stander.

This happened to me just the other day when i finished work to come home to a more than energetic pooch jumping for attention.

My local neighbourhood has a dog friendly park where you can switch off & enjoy the suburban streets & nature that surrounds. On my usual root I can’t help to stare at the nearby construction & renovation that seems to be never ending. There’s one particular renovation that is underway a few km’s from my home which i’ve been keeping tabs every time i walk the pooch.

In amongst many of the other renovations in the area, this one stood out. I made a mental note to check the progress on this one every so often.

About two weeks later the house was really starting to take shape. I noticed that one of the contractors that were working on the renovation was Heritage Slate Roofing. This was exciting because a lot of the roofs around Hunters Hill are quite old & antique. The house instantly looked as if it’s been given a re-birth! I asked one of the workers on site what kind of slate they were using, with one of them soon suggesting it was Canadian Slate the client locked in for there home.

Unfortunately slate roofs aren’t as common as your stock standard Colour bond or tiled roofs that typically populate the suburbs of Sydney. Certain areas / geographic location you’ll find specific roofing trends. For example in areas located in the Upper North Shore e.g. Mosman, St Ives, Willoughby, Killara etc etc you’ll tend to find more traditional style homes usually with Slate roofs. In comparison if you were to travel out to the western suburbs e.g. Parramatta, Strathfield etc you would find a lot more tiled roofs than say that on the Northern beaches where the use of Colour Bond roofing is a popular option.

There is a certain prestige, historic value & class that a slate roof offers. Natural slate harmonises perfectly with modern architecture. Its durability and beauty make this traditional building material the perfect choice for any cutting-edge design. It’s versatility & timelessness is part effect of this material in a way that it’s durability gives the surface involved a certain prestige, guaranteeing a far longer service life.

Elegance, sophistication, prestige, charisma, individualism are just a few of the words that came across my mind once this renovation was complete. The new home fit with Canadian Slate & terracotta ridges is now seen with much envy throughout the street (including me).”

With renewable /sustainable energy products being a strong selling point in today’s construction industry we delve into whether or not the companies producing these products technology is up to standard & coincides with modern safety standards.

Maybe you’ve had concerns about solar panels and any inherent fire hazard they might have. Maybe you haven’t. But the information is important.

There are generally 4 types of fire hazards & concerns around solar tiles:

Concern #1: Solar tiles themselves might cause a fire.

While this fire occurrence is extremely rare, it may happen if there are electric/fire hazards present, or if there is an improper connection in the equipment.

This concern is a good reason for why we often press homeowners to have a professional install their solar panels. Their electricians know how to check for these dangers. And, if something does go wrong, you have a company with insurance to fall back on.

Concern #2: Solar panels will affect ability of fire fighters to fight a fire.

Another concern is how solar panels may affect an unrelated fire in a building. Some worry about how the solar energy system’s layout may affect how well fire fighters are able to control a fire. And they also worry how solar panels might affect a pre-existing fire.

Concern #3: Are fire fighters safe when fighting a fire with solar products involved?

Some are concerned fire fighters are exposed to more risk when fighting a fire with solar products. Since the presence of solar products may influence how fires are fought, building codes and product standards reflect this change to reduce risk.

Concern #4: One in ten owners have replaced their inverter

An inverter converts the direct current (DC) electricity produced by solar panels to alternating current (AC) which can be used in your home.

Solar panels are expected to have at least a 20-year lifespan. But inverters aren’t so long-lasting, so you should bear in mind you’ll probably have to replace it during the lifetime of your solar PV system.

Other problems experienced by fewer than 4% of owners were accidental damage to panels (3%), problems with other parts (2%) and isolator problems (1%).

But 25% of you told us that you’d experienced another type of problem. One of the most commonly reported was birds nesting or shitting on the panels.

Source: https://www.which.co.uk/news/2017/08/top-five-solar-panel-problems/

It’s always worth having a detailed research before you invest large amounts of money on your home & safety.

Slate is a natural stone, and adds a touch of class to your building. Because it does not call for much maintenance, you can relax once installed. However, there are times when unexpected damage or issues may make slate roof repairs inevitable.

When you are in need of slate roof repairs, it is important to hire a professional service. Our team at Heritage Slate Roofing offer professional, reliable and affordable slate roof repairs.

How we work?

When repairing slate roofs, it is essential to ensure that the replacement tiles are of the same size and colour as the broken ones. This is the only way to match the texture and shade of the existing roof.

Matching slate size is easier than matching for colour. After all, slate is a natural stone, and the colour depends on myriad factors. With a huge stock of replacement slate, we can ensure perfect colour match.

Successful slate roof repairs are a result of careful planning. We put in the time and effort to prepare your roof and to source the right replacement materials.

Where do you begin repairing a slate roof?

Quite commonly, broken slates are normally visible from the ground & quite often the general phone call you would receive of this category “I have a slate missing” or “I found a slate that fell off my roof on my lawn”. However for the soul purpose of estimating & guaranteeing the damage a ladder or in our case a drone must be used to investigate potential slate slippage cracks or nail fatigue of surrounding slate.

Slate Roofing is a very popular choice when it comes to deciding which roofing material to use on a pitched roof. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, and increasing the potential selling value of the house, slate roofs have a number of physical benefits. Slate is a durable and hard-wearing material that provides waterproofing characteristics to a pitched roof, unlike other roof materials which absorb water. This means that slate is unaffected by frost, freezing & fire damage.

So you’ve come to the decision that slate is the optimum option for your roofing project, but how do you slate a roof? Here at Heritage Slate Roofing we’ve created a summarised guide on how to slate a roof.
So here it is…

1. Find out the pitch of your roof

Before starting the installation process, you need to find out the pitch of your roof – the roof pitch dictates how much overlap is required with each slate. This has been made easier with the development of technology – most smartphones nowadays can access apps that have been designed specifically to find out the pitch or angle of your roof.

2. Find out the required overlap

Once you’ve found out the pitch of your roof, take a look at the slate manufacturer’s specification – each manufacturer will suggest the required overlap in order to form a stable and secure slate roof.

3. Roll out the roof sarking

Firstly, ensure your rafters or trusses are clean of any splinters or old nails that could damage the sarking. Then roll your chosen roofing sarking along the roof trusses – start from one bottom corner and rolling it along to the other corner.

Repeat this method and work upwards to the top of the roof. Make sure the roofing sarking hangs over the bottom of the roof and into the gutter to provide and encourage any water that gets past the slates to drain off into the gutter.

4. Secure the roof sarking

Once the sarking has been rolled out, use clout nails to secure one edge. Then pull the sarking taut at the other end, and fix into position, before adding a few more nails across the sarking where it meets the timber trusses for extra stability.

5. Batten placement

a) The next step is to work out the placement of the battens – to do this you’ll need two full sized slates and an under eaves slate. Place two battens onto the roof on top of the overlay – don’t fix them down so they can be moved around for adjustments easily.

b) Now place a full sized slate onto a batten, with an overhang into the gutter of around 50mm, and with the pre-drilled holes lined up with the centre of the batten – then put temporary fixings into the batten.

c) Next, put the second batten underneath the slate, and slide it upwards towards the first batten. Take the eaves slate and position it onto the second batten, ensuring it reaches the bottom of the roofline.

d) Secure both battens into the roof rafters using galvanised nails – ensure both battens are parallel by measuring from specific points along the roofline, checking that the difference in distance between them remains the same.

e) Add a third batten, sliding it from the top down wards to below the top of the slates. Make sure that the top of the full sized slate is sitting central to the batten.

f) Place a second full slate onto the third batten, ensuring the pre-drilled holes are lined up with the centre of the batten – double check the batten is parallel, then fix it into place.

6. Lay the roof slates

Now the roof has been set out correctly, with the battens at the right distance apart, its time to lay the slates. Start by laying the under eaves course, creating a staggered pattern for stability – a 5mm gap between each slate is required to allow for natural expansion.

This is an age-old argument that many people face installing or restoring a new roof. This argument will always be present in the construction industry and commonly will often have people take sides on what they truly believe is the more cost effective, aesthetic, more reliable option for their project.

One of the factors that deter many homeowners from installing a slate roof is the high cost of materials and labour. This all varies pending on the grade, thickness, and overall quality of the particular slate tiles. In this blog I will present a non-bias argument that fairly justifies both sides of the equation & by the end of the day hopefully you retain enough information to decide what the best option is for your desired project.

Colorbond Roofing

We’ll start with Sydney’s most common roofing option, Colorbond Roofing or Metal Roof.

Metal Roofing has always been a popular trend in the construction industry mainly due to the ability to perform better in all types of weather conditions from being able to shed rain and snow, to withstand high winds.

However, each type of metal roofs has its own advantages and disadvantages and knowing what these pros and cons are can be a useful tool upon deciding what type of roof you ultimately decide on.

What is Colorbond

Colorbond roofing is a coated steel roofing material manufactured by Bluescope steel. In recent years this roofing has been gaining popularity among contractors, and business and homeowners alike. The following are the advantages of owning a Colourbond roof:

This roofing is perfect for buildings that have no pitch or very little pitch as water will still run off this type of roofing.

Colorbond roofing comes in a wide variety of colours, which allows your roof to compliment not compete with the colour of your home.

Colorbond roofing gives your home a neat, modern appearance.

It is long lasting and light weight.

It holds steady in high winds and rain.

Because the colour is bonded to the metal, it doesn’t need painting as often as other metal roofing materials.

It’s lower in maintenance than many roofing materials.

If this roof is properly installed it can cut down on heating and cooling cost.

However there are always two sides to a coin. Here are some disadvantages to this roofing material that’s always good to consider:

While colorbond roofing doesn’t need painting every year or every other year like some metal roofing the colour does deteriorate around the 10 year mark and needs to be refinished.

This roofing can also be somewhat noisy unless an acoustic blanket is placed down before the roofing is put on.

Warranties may differ pending on location of your home. For example if you live near the ocean warranties are restricted to only 10 years.

While most people find the advantages of a Colourbond roof outweigh the disadvantages, it really is up to each individual to decide if a Colourbond roof is right for them. Hopefully knowing the pros and cons of this type of roof will help you to choose the right roofing material to meet your needs.

Slate Roofing

The journey of the Slate roof story started 100’s of years ago, & is widely regarded as one of the highest quality, longest lasting materials on the market globally, but this material might not be for everyone. I’ll go through the pro’s & con’s and examine bother sides of this timeless impressive roofing solution.

The Pros

Slate roofing has some huge upsides, mostly due to the fact that it’s a natural stone product, giving it a unique, beautiful appearance, and the longevity that slate is famous for. Here’s a list of the most popular reasons homeowners choose to install slate roofing on their home:

Appearance— First and foremost, homeowners are drawn to slate because of its beauty. There simply isn’t a roofing material on the market that has a classier, more elegant appearance. Furthermore, slate roofing offers more choices than most homeowners realise, available in varying sizes and thicknesses, as well as a wide range of colours e.g. gray, green, purple, black & red.

Product Guarantee – Welsh Slate (Penrhyn) comes with a 100 year warranty direct from the quarry and with a 20 year workmanship guarantee from us at Heritage Slate Roofing. Slate may be slightly more expensive to buy but matched with a life time guarantee it’s a no brainer.

Longevity— Slate roofs can and should be routinely built to last at least a century. In fact, 150 years is a reasonable expectation of a roof’s longevity if the roof is properly constructed. That’s a big plus in an industry where many roofing systems are lucky to last 20 or 30 years before needing replacement.

Fire Resistance— Slate roofing is one of the most fire resistant roofs that exist. Unlike many other roofing materials, slate tiles themselves are completely fireproof. That’s a big advantage when it comes to preventing fires caused by wildfires or from adjacent house fires.

Environmentally Friendly— Roofing waste accounts for more than 5 percent of the total waste sent to landfills across the nation every year. Since the majority of that roofing waste can be attributed to asphalt shingle roofing that needs replacement every 20 to 30 years, it’s easy to see the positive environmental impacts of installing a roof that is going to last 100 years or more on the environment.

The Cons

The most notable con when it comes to installing a slate tile roof on your home is its high cost, but we’ll get to that in a minute. Other than that, the negatives of slate roofing that homeowners should be aware of include tough installation requirements, the fragility of slate, and complications that arise in replacing damaged slates.

Poor Installation— The vast majority of roofing contractors, as well as general contractors, know very little about slate roofs. Unfortunately, that doesn’t deter a lot of them from trying to install slate anyway. When hiring a contractor, be sure to inquire about experience and ask for references. A well installed slate roof will last a century or more. A poorly installed one is a lot like having no roof at all.

Weight— The weight of a slate can be anywhere between 39 and 74 kilograms per square meter. As such, you’ll need to have your residence evaluated from a structural standpoint before you install slate on your home to make sure it can take the weight. Check to see if your slate contractor can measure this in house.

Durability— The fragility of slate can be a big negative for homeowners. You don’t walk on them unless you know what you’re doing. Replacing broken tiles isn’t as easy as it sounds either. Since slate comes in lots, that makes it nearly impossible to find replacement tiles that are a perfect match.

Why choose Slate? For us at Heritage Slate Roofing it’s a no brainer. This is because day in day out we are surrounded by this beautiful material which we install all over NSW. We see first hand the quality, sophistication & dynamic ability this material has to work with all styles of homes from traditional to modern or even a blend of the two. But of course it’s not for everyone but hear me out for little under a minute & I’ll explain to you the 5 key points to take away using slate as your roofing choice.

Aesthetic Appeal

One of the most eye-catching features of slate is its natural beauty, followed by its truly uncontested durability and longevity. Slate will enhance the look of any architectural style from modern to traditional, and is available in a variety of natural slate colour and textures.

Slate’s colour options include green, gray, black, purple, red as well as tiles that sport a mixture of colours. Moreover, slate shingles are shaped by hand to meet specific requirements and can be custom made in a variety of thicknesses and sizes. Regardless of its age, slate will maintain its distinctive appearance throughout it’s vast lifespan.

Longevity

When it comes to longevity there are few roofing materials that compete with slate. A slate roof will quite easily last over 100 years, which is at least double of what other roofing materials can vouch as a guarantee.

We at Heritage offer a 100 year manufacturer warranty & a 20 year workmanship guarantee on all our new slate roofing systems. For people who do not plan to ever sell their home, the incredible longevity of slate is a highly desirable benefit.

Durability and Low Maintenance

Being a sub product from natural stone, slate is more durable than any man-made material. High density of slate makes it waterproof, meaning that it will not absorb water. Slate is completely non-combustible and will protect your home in the event of a fire. Slate is also highly resistant to any temperature fluctuations and inclement weather conditions, making it ideal in areas prone to heavy rain, snow, and wind.

Moreover, a slate roof will not be affected by fungus and mould. These properties make a slate roof practically maintenance free, allowing you to have peace of mind, without having to spend extra cash on expensive maintenance and repairs.

High Resale Home Value

Installing a slate roof on a house greatly increases its resale value. Moreover, slate’s permanence, durability and aesthetic appeal will make your home more attractive to prospective buyers if you ever do decide to put your house up on market.

Environmentally – Friendly

Slate’s longevity makes it an environmentally friendly roofing choice. Roofing waste from roofs that get replaced every 10-20 years currently accounts for 5% of all construction waste that fills up our shrinking landfill space. With a slate roof, you will not be contributing to this problem!

So there you have it, the big 5! Of course case by case Slate may not be the right choice for your home but at least you know now the various benefits of this wonder material.

Happy Reading.
